Another Charter Vulture Feathers Its Nest |
Why should any publicly funded school need to hire PR people, especially if it claims to be the best? Why would it need to make huge campaign donations and flood the media with its own propaganda?
According to the Daily News, Moskowitz spent $912,000 on student recruitment in 2011. In 2012, Moskowitz gave SDK Knickerbocker $243,150 to help promote her charters (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/eva-moskowitz-success-academy-charter-schools-disproportionate-share-state-education-money-article-1.1101668), a firm that has also served the interests of Barack Obama, Andrew Cuomo and Michael Bloomberg. She gave $129,000 to a consulting firm in Washington founded by David Axelrod, President Obama's chief strategist.
In 2011, she spent $883,119 on student recruitment, including glossy brochures, other ads and door-to-door activity. She spent another $912,000 on "big advertising and branding" companies (see Daily News cited above).
Most recently, she spent $5 million on a campaign of ads aimed to bring down Mayor De Blasio in his attempts to protect some public-school children from the dire effects of her charters. Guess what? Looks like she's won. Children with disabilities will be pushed out of their middle school to make way for more of her "Success" Academy students. Her school would never accept children like those with disabilities whom she evicts (http://dianeravitch.net/2014/04/07/what-eva-won-thanks-billionaires/). I feel like we're witnessing the colonization of America again; public-school children are the new Native Americans to be pushed aside by any means possible. Eva must secure the land for her advanced civilization!
She and her charter also showered $400,000 upon Governor Cuomo. Her PAC, Great Public Schools, gave $65,000 to Cuomo since 2011 (http://dianeravitch.net/2014/03/06/why-cuomo-loves-charters/). Guess what? Looks like she's won again. State law has forced the City to give her extra funding, find her more space, or foot the bill.
There is nothing subtle about the way Eva Moskowitz conducts the business of her "public schools." She steamrolls with a stash of dollars everything that stands in her way, including students with disabilities.
All of the millions spent on her PR, ads and glossy pamphlets hide the story of the 90+% public-school children who suffer in overcrowded, underfunded schools. She does not tell you about the children who suffer second-rate colocation status. She does not tell the story of Success Test-Prep Academy which wins data games through strict discipline and the attrition of students who do not make the grade. She does not tell the story of her nearly $500,000 income. She is truly the Lady Who Gets What She Wants At Whatever Price It Costs!
